A NEW STEP TOWARDS A “GREEN” UNIVERSITY: A 150 kW SOLAR POWER PLANT COMMISSIONED AT IUTET

With the direct support of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, particularly the Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon, and within the framework of the national policy on promoting the green economy and renewable energy sources, as well as the implementation of specific provisions of the Development Strategy of the International University of Tourism and Entrepreneurship of Tajikistan through 2040, a 150 kW photovoltaic solar power plant has been commissioned at the University’s Center for Professional Skills. The project was implemented in cooperation with the Asian Development Bank.

This initiative also reflects the vision of the Chairman of the National Assembly of the Supreme Assembly of the Republic of Tajikistan and Mayor of Dushanbe, His Excellency Rustam Emomali, aimed at developing a “Green City” and introducing environmentally friendly modern technologies. The project contributes to improving energy efficiency, reducing environmental impacts, and developing sustainable green infrastructure.

The commissioning of the solar power plant enables the University to meet a significant portion of its electricity demand through renewable energy sources, thereby increasing its contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting the environment. According to technical estimates, the facility has an annual electricity generation capacity of more than 205,000 kilowatt-hours.

It is noteworthy that the International University of Tourism and Entrepreneurship of Tajikistan, as the National Coordinator of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, considers the implementation of sustainable development principles, the green economy, and innovative technologies among its key strategic priorities. The installation of the 150 kW solar power plant represents an important milestone in transforming the University into a “Green University” and strengthening its international standing.

This initiative further enhances the University’s contribution to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in ensuring access to affordable and clean energy, developing resilient infrastructure, and combating climate change. It also serves as a model of best practice for other higher education institutions across the country.

The University leadership plans to further expand the use of green technologies in the near future and implement new initiatives aimed at creating a modern educational and research environment aligned with the principles of sustainable development.
